Pentecost - May 20

Pentecost is a day of celebration for the church that takes place about 7 weeks after Easter. On this day we remember the story from Acts 2, where the Holy Spirit moved through the early church, enabling people to understand one another, and giving them the confidence to speak news of the resurrection. People call this day the “Birthday of the Church,” for it was through that movement of the Holy Spirit that people gained the confidence to speak, leading to evangelism, invitation, and the creation of the early church. We tell this story today to remind us that it is God that guides the church; and we celebrate that gift with the color red, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s tongues of fire and  persistent spirit.
