The service of Tenebrae, a meditation on Christ’s suffering, has been practiced since medieval times. The word tenebrae comes from the Latin meaning “darkness”. Through readings and music, we remember the somber events of Jesus’ last week. We ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering through increasing darkness symbolizing the approaching darkness of Jesus’ death and the hopelessness of a world without God.
