Why are we changing our worship times?
Two years ago, the Session adopted as one of their strategic goals that our Sunday morning experience reflect a vibrant community of faith, in which all generations can thrive, and that attracts new members to our community. We are excited about the connection and growth possibilities the new schedule provides. Specifically, as we begin a new program year after a season of social isolation, we believe the new schedule will allow us to better reconnect as a community.
How did this decision come about?
The Session appointed a Sunday Morning Task Force which reviewed worship offerings, including attendance and engagement across all ages. This intensive study revealed that we have not fostered new growth in our Sunday Morning experience in nearly two decades. Faithful utilization of our resources, including clergy, laity and building, was also a factor. The interest expressed through online worship on several platforms also showed that we have a nationwide congregation of people who want to worship with us.
What is the difference in the two services?
Musical genre and style are the primary difference. Our traditional services features a choir, organ, and piano and is directed by our Director of Music, Steve Jobman. Our Contemporary service features band lead music and is lead by our Contemporary Music Leader, Kendall Payne. If you are interested in providing musical leadership in either service use the links below to get connected. Additionally, Communion will be celebrated each week at the 9 am service and monthly at the 10:30 am service.
What will happen with Children’s Sunday school?
Sunday school for children will take place at 9 am. A new Children’s Worship Service has been added that will take place at 10:30 am in the Chapel. Children are invited to worship in either service or may participate in these offerings.
How does this affect Youth programming?
The Youth are planning to offer two different times for small groups and fellowship.
Sunday mornings from 9-10 am: “The Extra Hour”
During the extra hour, the youth house will be open for small groups and special classes such as confirmation. The Youth staff will have coffee and donuts for fellowship. This will be an extra hour for youth who want to engage in the youth group on an even deeper level.
Sunday evenings from 6-8 pm: Worship In The House + Youth Group
Sunday evenings will be a combination of Worship In The House and youth group. We will have Worship In The House from 6-6:45 pm, dinner form 6:45-7 pm, and then from 7-8 pm Junior High and Senior High will split for discussion, games and prayer in their smaller groups.
What about Adult Sunday school classes?
Long term Sunday school classes will continue to meet and will get to pick their time and space. An array of new short-term Adult Education classes will be offered each semester.
How will this affect WRR and the livestream?
Beginning September 12th, our WRR broadcast will move to 10:30 am. Our livestream will reflect our service times of 9 am Contemporary and 10:30 am Traditional.
How will this affect the music ministry?
Adult choir members will sing during the 10:30 am service, having gathered at 10 am for rehearsal. On special music Sundays, including Christmas Music Sunday and Easter, the Sunday morning schedule may change to accommodate larger numbers of congregants.
How will this affect Children's Choirs?
Children's choir rehearsals will be scheduled weekly from 10 to 10:30 am.
Will we ever add back in more services?
The Session will add additional worship offerings when average attendance necessitates such a need.
Will we change this schedule for next summer?
No, we will continue with the 9 am Contemporary Worship and 10:30 am Traditional Worship.
How will we know if the new schedule is fulfilling the Session’s goals?
The Session will carefully study the results of the changes, both quantitative and qualitative, as the year progresses and evaluate their effectiveness in the life of our congregation from spiritual, community and outreach perspectives.
