Advent Devotional - December 11

December 28, 2021

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

REFLECTION

My grandmother raised me from the time I was two days old. My mother died in childbirth. Among the things she taught me were to never say anything that might harm someone, don’t say anything you might regret - try to engage your mind before putting your mouth in motion. I have practiced these words more than you can imagine.

As a high school and college basketball official for more than 55 years, I had more than one opportunity to practice these words. I tried to impart a bit of wisdom to the coaches, by telling them, “Help me keep you in this game by choosing your words wisely.”

To this day, I have found that my grandmother’s words are still true.

PRAYER

Dear God,

Help us to practice what Jesus taught us, by being kind and considerate of others in word and deed.
