Lenten Cycle Bar Ride

December 28, 2021

This Sunday, we hosted a Cycle Bar ride at Cycle Bar Preston Forest as a part of the season of Lent.

In the Christian tradition, Lent is the season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday (the Saturday before Easter Sunday).

Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent offers a season of reflection upon ways we are called to turn away from sin and toward God.

Much like the rhythms of a Cycle Bar ride, Lent can be seen as a time of challenge and comfort. Lent challenges us to examine those places in our hearts and our lives that don’t align with God’s desire for us. Lent challenges us, by the grace of God, to continually be transformed into people who live out justice, kindness, love, and peace.

Lent comforts us with the promise of God’s grace and God’s presence in our lives always. God is always inviting us into deeper, fuller relationship. The challenge and comfort of Lent are practices we engage in alone and together.

As we rode together on Sunday, member Jill Mearns guided us through the rhythms of comfort and challenge. She engaged our senses, encouraged us to settle into our bodies, and open our hearts to deeper relationship with God and our neighbors.
